Kenduri Kendara by SIS
Sisters in Islam has conducted the Kenduri Kendara on 14th of September 2017, the event was conducted from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Kenduri Kendara is a theatrical feast of food, identity, love and discontent presented by by Azzad Mahdzir and Tan Hui Woon from The Keepers Studio, this show represents their hope to bridge activism in promoting gender equality with arts in Malaysia.
The event consists of several sessions, the first one is Gerobok, second one is Suap and the third one is Samar. After Samar ended, Gerobok and Suap consecutively began again. Each session shows certain stories pertaining to a theme. Gerobok explores the veil and how it’s tethered to the participants’ memories and identity, Suap is a hand-to-mouth feeding ritual which explores the ability of this ritual to bond individuals and Samar is a series of vignettes that depict a young muslim couple that falls in and out of love, from the start of their marriage through the process of divorce, moreover this show was focused on picturing the struggling of women in Malaysia in facing patriarchal culture.
Participants came from diverse background, mostly dominated by young generation, they actively involved in Gerobok and Suap sessions, they also seemed very interested in the topic that was brought at the stage performance as the complication that was presented in the story depicts the actual problems that many young muslim couple are facing right now.
